Religious Legalism and the Army Chaplaincy

I was sitting in class, only about two hours after my last post, when a guest speaker told a story that was the exact opposite of my last post’s topic.  I just have to share it with you all.

The guest speaker was a Battalion Command Sergeant Major (CSM).  He has won multiple combat medals and honors, and has achieved the highest enlisted rank short of Sergeant Major of the Army (which can only be held by one person at a time).  He was explaining the senior enlisted perspective on Chaplain support for units.  It was greatly encouraging and more than a little entertaining.  At one point he told a very personal story to emphasize just how much a Chaplain can affect the soldiers in their unit.  Read more »

Unborn child

This is quite a sobering and sad testimony from the UK about women who undergo multiple abortions for the purpose of contraception.

According to a government statistics cited by the article, the number of women seeking more than one abortion is climbing. Approximately 1,300 women in the UK had their fifth abortion last year.

This, on top of another recent report from the UK’s Royal College of Psychiatrists, warning about the increased possibility of mental illness associated with abortion.

Is there any reason to believe this is much different in America?

Numerous faith-based ministries and pregnancy resource centers work to counsel women who feel trapped in their situations, and consider abortion to be the only way out. While there will always be folks who give the entire pro-life movement a bad rap (and they always somehow seem to be easy finds for the media), they are the minority compared to the folks quietly doing the blessed work of counseling women and providing help.

And there are encouraging stories out there as well, such as this one about a mother who’s delighted her child survived an attempted abortion.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” -Psalm 139:13

God’s Grace And The Army Chaplaincy

I’m currently at Fort Jackson, SC for Phase 1 of the U.S. Army’s Chaplain Basic Officer Leader Course. I’ve settled into a daily rhythm of waking up at 4:30 to get to PT by 5:15. PT lasts until 6:45, and then I get to go back to my room and get ready for Chapel at 8:15. Between stuffing down some food, scrubbing that South Carolina grit off my skin, throwing on my uniform, and running out the door, I’ve been able to squeeze in 5-10 minutes of stillness and reflection every morning.
